Tokyo 2020 triathlon line-ups begin to take shape as Olympic Qualification Period closes

With the closure of the 2021 Olympic Qualification period after the weekend’s World Triathlon Cup Huatulco, the start lists for Tokyo 2020 individual Men’s and Women’s Triathlon and the Mixed Team Relay are now starting to be defined. The 39 national federations have been informed and they now have until 5 July to confirm their entries. Let the countdown to the Olympic Games begin!

While the very first names confirmed were revealed after the results of the 2019 Tokyo Test Event, of the 39 countries that will be sending athletes to compete, it is now certain that 17 will also have a team in the inaugural Mixed Team Relay when the fast and furious format makes its Olympic debut on 31 July. The ASICS World Triathlon Team, the development programme that supports athletes from smaller nations in their bid to reach the Olympics, has six members heading to Tokyo.

“With the qualification period now over and many national federations having already selected their athletes, final preparations for this most eagerly awaited Olympic Games can begin. We are delighted to see 39 nations will be represented on the start line in Tokyo, the second-highest number in the proud Olympic history of our sport, and six athletes representing ASICS World Triathlon development squad. There is no doubt that the 17 teams taking part in the Games’ first Mixed Relay event will also provide the kind of entertainment and inspiration to viewers the world over that will be an enormous boost for triathlon,” said World Triathlon President and IOC member Marisol Casado.

Australia is the only country to have qualified its full quota of three men and three women, thereby also giving them the maximum options for their relay squad. France, Spain and Norway are the only other teams to have qualified three men, while Great Britain, Italy and USA are the only other nations to have filled all three of their available women’s spots.

Set your calendars for the Tokyo 2020 men’s race taking place on Monday 26 July at 06.30 and the women’s on Tuesday 27 July at the same time. The Mixed Team Relay gets underway on Saturday 31 July, with the start horn sounding at 07.30.
