The final race in the Belpark Duathlon series took place in Phoenix Park on Wednesday evening. The series consists of four races involving a 2mile run / 10mile cycle and 2 mile run. The series was a great success with up to 150 eager athletes taking part in each race.
The weather was pleasant with a headwind on the first straight. The 150 took off and it didnt take long for Colm Cassidy and Peter Kern to take the lead. Both fast out of transition they took off on the bike. 3Dtri’s Cassidy put in a spectacularly fast bike split and was never in any real danger of being passed out. Belparks Art McManusa and Brian Crinion passed Kern on lap one and the club mates battled hard all the way exchanging places with each alternate lap or so it seemed right through T2 and on to the run. Crinion led out the run only to be passed at the post by the ever improving Art for second place. There was only going to be one winner on the day, the question was would he set a mens course record, The headwind on the main drag put paid to that ambition, by the slimmest of margins, missing it by less than 10 seconds.
In the ladies Beth McCloskey held on from a fast finishing Katharina Baldinger with Sharon Dolan in third.
