Triathlon New Zealand President Garry Boon has announced that Craig Waugh has been appointed as the organisations new Chief Executive Officer.
Waugh takes over the role from outgoing CEO Dave Beeche, who announced in March his move to the role to CEO of the 2012 Dextro Energy Triathlon ITU World Championship Grand Final Auckland.
Waugh offers a broad base of skills with considerable experience in both the sports and the corporate sectors as marketing professional with 20-years experience. His well rounded commercial experience has included general management, sports marketing, retail, consumables and financial services. From his six years with adidas and time spent since with Sovereign Assurance, Waugh has demonstrated a track record of enhanced relationship and alliance building and influence with key stakeholders. In his last two roles he has also had a focus of driving execution to translate strategy into operational reality. His passion for sport is unquestionable with involvement in both amateur and professional administration through the years. He is an active novice in the sports of triathlon and golf and he has also dabbled in rugby, cricket and athletics.
Waugh is looking forward to working at the helm of a fast growing and successful sport.
“My intention is to listen, seek to understand and build on the great work that Dave Beeche and the board have done for the sport of triathlon in the past half a dozen years,” he said. “It is a fast growing sport that resonates with many Kiwis and it will be exciting to be part of energised and dynamic team.”
Garry Boon is excited that the sport has secured Waugh’s services.
“We are delighted that a person of Craig’s calibre and experience sought this appointment and was able to be selected from a wide range of talented applicants,” he said. “Triathlon NZ is well positioned for further growth and development as a leading sport able to be pursued by all enthusiastic New Zealanders alongside the outstanding international and Olympic success achieved by our elite athletes. Craig joins Triathlon NZ at a time where exceptional opportunities exist to support that growth.”
Craig Waugh begins his new role on July 4, 2011.
