ITU announced on Tuesday the list of successful candidates who will be going to Tokyo for the Games of the XXXII Olympiad and for the 16th Summer Paralympic Games.
This will be the second time that the Japanese city has hosted both sporting celebrations. 964 was the last time that the Games were held here and Tokyo will be the first Asian city to host the Games twice.
Nominations were made by individual federations and it was the ITU Technical Committee’s decision, ratified by the ITU Executive Board last weekend in Madrid that saw the final list being released yesterday.
Tears of joy for those selected, sadness to many who have given so much to the sport but who were not chosen.
For ETU, there will be 11 officials, both Level III and Level II heading off to the land of the Rising Sun (日本) from 18 different nations in Europe, to each of the Games.
No way is this going to be a fun-packed, all-expenses-paid trip to see the sights. The officials will all be expected to work long hours in testing conditions under the watchful eyes of the Technical Delegates as they all, as one team, do their very best to deliver.
Friends, family and federations will be watching the Games not only for the sport, but also to see if they can catch sight of the 22 European Officials working at the triathlon events.
Well done to them all – go forth, experience, enjoy, bring back and share with us your experiences and memories.
