Welcome to our latest round up of all that’s hot and happening in swim-bike-run, the latest World Triathlon Weekly. The World Cup season may have come to a close in Vina del Mar earlier this month, but the Continental Cup action continues in Xiamen (CHN) and Kilifi (KEN) this weekend, as well as Americas and Asia continental duathlon championships in Venezuela and the Philippines respectively.
We have also been rewinding through some of the best moments and performances of the 2023 World Cup season on the World Triathlon social channels this week, and stay tuned as we continue to recap another brilliant year on the blue carpet.
Kate Waugh and Max Stapley triumph in Phuket
This year’s iconic Laguna Phuket Triathlon race saw two new names added to the roll of honour, and it was the British pair of Kate Waugh and Max Stapley who topped the podium in this hybrid-distance (1.8km / 55km / 12km), non-drafting event. Swiss duo Julie Derron and Max Studer both took silvers, Sophie Malowiecki (AUS) and Antony Costes (FRA) with the bronze medals.
Javier Gomez and Emma Pallant-Browne qualify for 2024 IM 70.3 World Championships
After 18 months away from racing, five-time world champion and Olympic medallist Javier Gomez Noya (ESP) won the IRONMAN 70.3 Mossel Bay and stamped his ticket to next year’s 70.3 World Championships in Taupo, New Zealand. Great Britain’s Emma Pallant-Browne defended her title with a decisive win in the women’s race, going two minutes faster this year and finishing in 4:21:24.
Marten van Riel and Ellie Salthouse earn middle distance victories in Fortaleza
The Belgian was back with a bang as Marten van Riel recorded a resounding victory at IRONMAN 70.3 Fortaleza, taking the tape by more than three minutes having led for the duration of the race. In the women’s race, Ellie Salthouse‘s (AUS) margin of victory was even more resounding, taking gold in the south of Brazil by more than 12 minutes.
