The World Triathlon Weekly - #1

What happened in the World of Triathlon this week? Welcome to our round up of all that’s hot and happening in swim-bike-run. Brought to you every Friday by the World Triathlon Media Team.

- In case you missed it (blink blink) Lucy Charles Barclay was finally crowned the 2023 Queen of Kona. Our massive congrats to the Ironman World Champion, and to Anne Haug and Laura Philipp, second and third on the day. Also kudos to Taylor Knibb for a pretty awesome long distance debut with a 4th place. Not bad for the first time she’s ever run 42.2km. And, of course, hats off to every single woman on the start list, you all rock!  Quoting the Queen of Kona: “Be patient. Be fearless. And never give up.”

- Meanwhile in Brazil we had another display of female firepower, with recent mum and top Italian athlete Alice Betto claiming victory at the Brasilia World Cup, while another recent mum and double Olympic medallist, USA’s Katie Zaferes, finished second. Third place for Rosa Tapia, from Mexico, while a third athlete-mum, Elizabeth Bravo, finished in 5th place. If you missed it, you can rewatch here! In the men’s race, Brazil’s Miguel Hidalgo produced a fab victory on home soil even after crashing in T1, proving that it ain’t over til it’s over. Antonio Serrat (ESP) and Charles Paquet (CAN) accompanied him on the podium. You can watch the race over again on TriathlonLIVE.tv.

- The chase for Olympic ranking points was on fire in China, at the Chengdu World Cup. Famous for the -here goes a Panda emoji that our backend does not support and we can not show you- and the impressive triathlon venue, Chengdu delivered two uber exciting Olympic distance races that you can rewatch on TriathlonLIVE. Spoiler alert: Pretty cool day at the office for Tim Hellwig and Bianca Seregni.

- He might still be racing U23, but Jamie Riddle proved once again this weekend that he can mix it with the best of them in Hurghada, Egypt. South Africa’s rising star claimed the Elite Men African Championships -and the U23 title as well- with an impressive swim, bike and run, crossing the finish line ahead of Badr Siwane and Jawad Abdelmoula, both from Morocco. The new women’s African champion is Vicky Van Der Merwe, who led a podium sweep by South Africa, along with Amber Schlebusch and Shanae Williams.
