Sport Lisboa e Benfica takes the title in Banyoles and Vanessa Fernandes gets to wear gold once more

Banyoles is by now a well-known venue for athletes. This year some 2,000 raced at the venue and with the Spanish national Championships taking place alongside the 2017 Banyoles ETU Triathlon Clubs European Championships the atmosphere was truly electric.

We are waiting on the official results but last years’ winners, Poissy Triathlon (FRA) were beaten in a thrilling race by Portugal’s Sport Lisboa e Benfica. Third place and the bronze medals went to Spanish Team Cidade de Lugo Fluvial.

With celebrations on the finish line led by Vanesa Fernandes, the Benfica team showed true emotion at having won the title. Click here for a short video.

This year we also have the Junior Clubs racing and it was a fantastic gold for Spain’s Cidade de Lugo Fluvial junior team taking the title. GB’s East Midlands Regional Academy that came home in silver and bronze went to Belgium’s Team TRIBE

The Spanish team was delighted with its historic double podium and said after the race, “Excelente manera de empezar una mañana de domingo. Nuestro equipo élite ha conseguido finalizar TERCERO y el junior CAMPEÓN de Europa de clubed. Gracias a una a una magnífica actuación de sus componentes: Lucía Vergara, Pablo Dapena, Cecilia Santamaría y Antonio Benito en élite. Y a los juniors: María Rico, Javi Lluch, Sharon García y Romaric Forqués. ENHORABUENA! A great way to start a Sunday morning. Our Elite Team has managed to finish third and our Juniors became European Champions. Thanks to a magnificent performance our athletes: Lucía Vergara, Pablo Dapena, Cecilia Santamaría y Antonio Benito for the Elite. And for the Juniors: María Rico, Javi Lluch, Sharon García y Romaric Forqués.  Congratulations”
