The annual ITU World Junior and U23 Camp is currently taking place at the Sports Super Centre in Runaway Bay, Gold Coast.
With 2010 marking the inaugural Youth Olympic Games in Singapore, ITU is continually looking to develop new opportunities for younger elite athletes to better themselves and their National Federations through the ITU Sport Development programme.
Lead by Director of ITU Sport Development, Libby Burrell, the 49 participants span across 24 countries from five continents making a truly global partnership where national level athletes and coaches from developing and emerging nations can come together to improve triathlon across the world through education and participation.
There are ITU Sport Development debutants from India, Namibia and the Philippines with ‘old campers’ from Argentina, Mauritius, Sweden, Serbia, South African, Puerto Rico, Croatia and Barbados. The youngest participant is 15 year old Scott Ang from Singapore.
Previous World Junior Camps have been held in Tiszaujvaros, Hungary before the ITU Triathlon World Championships in 2006 and 2007, but 2009 marks the first time that under 23 athletes have been invited.
ITU Media will be bringing you news stories, videos and photos from the camp as the Sport Development programme helps to create the new crop of fledgling talent in both performance and coaching.
