The Local Organizing Committee of the 2019 Pontevedra ITU Multisport World Championships, in coordination with the competent authorities, has decided to make a small change in the schedule of its competitions to make it compatible with the general elections called for Sunday, April 28, date on which it was due celebrate the Duathlon Standard distance and that forced major restrictions on urban mobility.
After extensive talks, the decision has been made to move the Duathlon Standard World Championships of Elite and Age Group categories forward to Saturday, 27th of April in the afternoon, from 17.00, while the Juniors and Paratriathlon will still compete on Sunday 28 but with a modified route that will have practically no impact on urban mobility or impact on election day.
In this way, the Elite and Age Groupers will still compete on the same weekend, just a few hours before what was initially scheduled, and since they all had to be in Pontevedra on Saturday for briefings and check in, the LOC hopes that everyone can participate without changing their travel plans or lose plane tickets or accommodation.
Due to the Sprint and Standard Distance Age Group races taking place in the same day, athletes can not compete on both races.
In Spain, big events are not allowed to be held on the day of elections because road closures could affect citizens ability to vote and local authorities need to be on hand for the elections.
The rest of the competition calendar will not be affected.
