Best of 2014: A WTS Series of firsts

In another claim to a slice of history, Gwen Jorgensen’s win in Edmonton went down in the books several times over.

While the overall title was hers to lose headed into the final race of the season, Jorgensen was still aiming to finish the year on top. In a signature come-from-behind finish, she joined just Alistair Brownlee as the only other athlete to secure five WTS wins in one season. But that wasn’t all.

It was also her first World Championship title, the first time an American was named overall World Triathlon Series champion and the first time a female had won five WTS titles in one year.

Fellow American Sarah Groff also produced a strong and consistent season to sit just ahead of Jodie Stimpson in the rankings before Edmonton. A fourth-place finish at the Grand Final meant the Americans finished 1-2 in the rankings, which was another first just to sweeten the pot.
