The largest triathlon on the WTS schedule, the atmosphere in Hamburg is an athlete favorite. Read what they have to say about the races, the crowd and their expectations.
Gwen Jorgensen on continuing her winning streak at #WTSHamburg
“Everyone wants to go out there and win. It’d be an accomplishment if I’m able to execute on my swim, my bike and my run. I have some key processes that I want to achieve. I have a big race coming up in a few weeks at the Rio Test Event. I want to qualify for the Olympics there. This is a good hit out before that to see where I’m at.”
Jorgensen on Mixed Relay
“I love the team relay. I did it the last few years and I nominated to do it again this year. Hopefully I’ll be selected to race Sunday for Team USA. Any time I can wear Team USA it’s an honour and even more so when I can do it with my teammates.”
Mario Mola on the crowd at #WTSHamburg
“The atmosphere is pretty unbelievable. The crowd is crazy, of course cheering for the Germans, but everyone gets excited by this. It makes this race different to any other race. This year hasn’t been as good as I want, but I’ll try to give 110% on Saturday.”
Sophia Saller on finishing a masters in Mathematics this year along with competing
“Math gives me time and space to relax after training, put everything aside and not think about triathlon for a bit. If triathlon isn’t going well, it helps me forget about everything. If I didn’t have math, I’d overthink things and worry about it too much. Even the night before Cape Town I was studying for my exams so I wouldn’t think about the race too much.”
Saller on racing in #WTSHamburg
“I was competing here last year. It was my first WTS. It didn’t go that well for me, but the atmosphere was amazing. The number of people that came and cheered us on. I hope this year to give them something back.”
Fernando Alarza on the strong Spanish team
“Javi and Mario have been good references for me. Now I’m competing with them for the podium at the World Triathlon Series. This is very good for Spain. London was an amazing race, my first podium, my first medal. I’m really motivated for the podium again here in Hamburg.”
