Alistair Brownlee to relive Cozumel 2016 Grand Final with fans on TriathlonLIVE this weekend

On Saturday, 9 May at 6pm BST, two-time Olympic and World Champion Alistair Brownlee will take TriathlonLIVE viewers through every step that led up to one of the defining moments in the sport of triathlon: the Cozumel 2016 Grand Final.

“I’m looking forward to reliving Cozumel 2016 this weekend,” said Brownlee from his UK base. “It’s certainly a race I will never forget. On one hand I’d love to forget it, but on the other I’m proud in the part I played in one of the sports most iconic moments.”

The race came exactly one month after Brownlee had earned his second Olympic gold at Rio 2016. Fast-forward to Mexico, and the temperatures were high as the stakes.

Not for the first time, the world title was on the line for younger brother Jonny and Spain’s rising superstar Mario Mola. With just a few hundred metres to go and with gold and the title in his sights, the heat and exertion of the race hit Jonny hard. As he struggled to press on, Alistair appeared behind him, having to put his arm around his brother to help him to the finish, only for Mola to deliver a late charge that ultimately ensured his first World Championship crown.

It was a moment that resonated around the world and whose ramifications would have a huge impact on the sport.

On Saturday, as part of TriathlonLIVE’s new series of reLIVE shows bringing the Elites involved in the biggest races together to discuss the action, Alistair Brownlee and Richard Murray, the South African who trained with Mola and finished alongside the Spaniard, as well as some other athletes and technical officials involved on that race will be giving their unique insights and reflections on TriathlonLIVE.tv.

The reLIVE format allows fans to ask direct questions to the athletes, who themselves get a rare opportunity to watch a race in its entirety with their peers.

The series kicked off with Flora Duffy reliving her superb win as Bermuda made its WTS debut in 2018, followed by the Norwegian trio Casper Stornes, Kristian Blummenfelt and Gustav Iden who swept the podium the same year. Jonny Brownlee and Javier Gomez delivered brilliant insights and exchanges as they watched back their decisive 2013 Grand Final on a raucous London course, Vicky Holland and Ashleigh Gentle doing likewise as they relived the Gold Coast Grand Final from 2018 with the help of Jessica Learmonth.

Last weekend it was the turn of Mixed Relay royalty and rising stars as the GB, New Zealand and USA teams looked back over the 2019 U23/Junior Mixed Relay World Championships and the 2018 Hamburg World Championships with members of the USA and Australia squads.

Join Alistair Brownlee, Richard Murray and the extended triathlon family on Saturday from 6pm BST over on TriathlonLIVE.tv, and new subscribers will receive a 365-day free trial.
