On Saturday, 12 March, 52 Junior Men and 20 Junior Women will toe the start line at the 2016 Bloemfontein ATU Triathlon Junior African Championships in Maselspoort. This event features the future of South African Triathlon and will be well worth the watch. The 2016 Bloemfontein ATU Triathlon Junior African Championships will be held in conjunction with the Junior SA Championships events.
The Junior women’s ATU race will also feature Gizelde Strauss, Maude-Elaine Le Roux and Jayme-Sue Vermaas. Gizelde Strauss is the 2015 Adelaide ITU Duathlon World Championships title holder for Junior Women and also won the 2015 RSA Triathlon National Championships (Junior Women). Strauss will also have a good chance at securing the title for Junior Women in the 2016 Bloemfontein ATU Triathlon Junior African Championships on Saturday. Maude-Elaine Le Roux has a second place at the 2015 RSA Triathlon National Championships behind her name. She also came second at the 2015 Sharm El Sheikh ATU Triathlon African Championships and Pan Arab Championships for Junior Women. Jayme-Sue came third in last year’s Junior RSA Triathlon National Championships, with an impressive 9th position at the 2015 Sardegna ITU Cross Triathlon World Championships (Junior Women).
In the Junior men’s ATU event spectators can keep an eye on Nicholas Quenet, Wickus Saunders and Ruan van Zyl. Nicholas Quenet is the 2015 Junior RSA Triathlon National Championships title holder, also having claimed the title for the 2015 Sharm El Sheikh ATU Triathlon African Championships and Pan Arab event in the Junior Men category. Wickus Saunders claimed second place in both the 2015 Junior RSA Triathlon National Championships as well as the 2015 Sharm El Sheikh ATU Triathlon African Championships for Junior Men. Ruan van Zyl came third in last year’s Junior SA Tri Champs. He also claimed a 6th position at the 2015 Sardegna ITU Cross Triathlon World Championships (Junior Men).
