200 days to go until World Triathlon Championship Finals in Pontevedra

Spain marked 200 days to go until the 2023 World Triathlon Championship Finals with an official celebration and presentation with Miguel Anxo Fernandez Lores, Mayor of Pontevedra, in attendance. The 2023 Championship Finals will be hosted in Pontevedra from September 20-24.

The Galician city celebrated ‘200 days to go until the World Triathlon Championship Finals’ with a spectator-lined town hall square to commemorate the world’s best triathletes aiming for the start line in Pontevedra come September.

“Pontevedra will once again rewrite a new chapter in its history as the first city in the country to host the Championship Finals of the World Triathlon Series, an event that can bring more than 10,000 people,” said Miguel Anxo Fernandez Lores, mayor of Pontevedra.

“Today we are going to raise a flag which 10 years ago, we would not have dreamed of doing, but we were able to move forward as a city, we were able to be a reference, something that opens doors to the world. This event is a reward that has made possible the joint work, the work between institutions, sports technicians, day-to-day workers, municipal agencies,” added Mr Lores.

World Champions will be crowned for the Elite, U23 and Para triathlon, as well as Age-Group Standard distance, Age-Group Super Sprint distance and the Age-Group Standard distance Aquabike World Championships. The Championship Finals is the crown jewel of World Triathlon’s annual calendar. Previous hosts have included such cities as London, Budapest, Beijing, Auckland, Chicago, Gold Coast, Lausanne, Edmonton and Abu Dhabi in 2022.

The event, which was attended by all political institutions, was also attended by athletes including Pablo Dapena Gonzalez and the current Para Triathlon World and Olympic champion Susana Rodriguez who was delighted with the news that Pontevedra will host the finale of the season.

“I am very excited that Spain will host the finale of the World Triathlon Championship Finals and as a Galician, even more proud that the host city is Pontevedra. It seemed impossible to think that we would have the best triathletes in the world here, but now it is a reality and I am looking forward to the event.”

“Pontevedra has shown multiple times that it has everything in place to host top-level triathlon events. We are delighted to be returning here for the Championship Finals in 2023. This city has proven to be a fantastic host of multiple sports in the World Triathlon calendar, and I am sure that it will be more than ready to welcome the best triathletes of the world,” said World Triathlon President and IOC member, Marisol Casado.

A scoreboard was installed in the Town Square to countdown until the 2023 World Triathlon Championship Finals Pontevedra. The finale will be the culmination of a historic year for Triathlon Spain, which will also host the 2023 World Multisport Triathlon Championships Ibiza from 29 April to 7 May and the European Triathlon Championships in Madrid from 2 to 4 June.
