Aaron, nick-named “Bugs”, made his Olympic debut at the 2016 Rio Games after he secured Australia’s first Triathlon quota spot having finished 6th at the 2015 Rio Test Event. Aaron and fellow team member Ryan Bailie gave Australia its first dual top ten finishers in men’s triathlon history at Fort Copacabana after Aaron was the first Australian out of the water in the swim, ensuring he was well inside the top 10.
In his first year on the senior Triathlon Australia Team, in 2012, Aaron proved he was a force to be reckoned with after being crowned U23 World Champion. Royle took third at the event in Auckland in the 2014 ITU World Triathlon Series and won a bronze medal in the mixed relay at the 2014 Commonwealth Games. In 2015 Royle took third at the event in Stockholm in the 2015 ITU World Triathlon Seried and hird at the World Triathlon Series race in Leeds in the 2016. He competed at the 2016 Olympics where he finished 9th.
In 2019 Aaron made a switch with his training and is now based with a multi-nation squad, under the guidance of Joel Filliol.
